Operations Division Commander
Captain Alan Long


Captain Alan Long started his law enforcement career in 1982 as a Peace Officer for the City of Wheatland. He became a member of the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department in 1985, beginning as a Patrol Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Valley area. From 1987 to 1989, Captain Long worked as a resident Deputy in the foothills and then returned to the main office in Marysville to serve in the Detectives. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1990 and served as both a Patrol Supervisor and Detective Sergeant for the next few years. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1999 and took command of the Detective Unit. He was promoted to Captain in 2002 and commanded the Support Services Division until 2009 when he assumed command of the Operations Division in August.

During his career, Captain Long has worked in, supervised, and commanded many units within the Sheriff’s Department. These units include Detectives, Internal Affairs, Dispatch, Records, Evidence, Animal Care Services, Coroner, Narcotic Enforcement Team, to name a few. He spent 16 years with the Department’s Tactical Team and completed that duty in 2002 as the Team Commander. He has also served as a departmental instructor in a variety of areas including firearms and scenario based training.

Captain Long currently commands the Operations Division which includes the valley floor and foothill patrol operations, Investigations, Coroner and Public Administrator’s duties, Evidence, Marine Enforcement, SWAT, Reserves, STARS volunteers, Posse, and others.


Captain Long holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Management and is a graduate of the POST Command College, Class 45. He is the recipient of the Department’s Bronze Medal of Merit, the California Peace Officers Association Award of Merit, and the State of California’s Certificate of Commendation.

Captain Long is a life-long resident of Yuba/Sutter area and is married to his wife, Mary Lou, who has also served the County of Yuba for over 24 years and currently works for the Superior Court. He has two children, Kiley and Zach, who both attend school in Yuba County
