A Hallwood man was arrested Wednesday evening for resisting arrest after a short pursuit, Yuba County Sheriff Steve Durfor said today.
A neighbor called the Sheriff’s Department to report that David Poteet, 39, was intoxicated and walking down Highway 20 to the Country Market. As a deputy was checking the area, another neighbor told him that Poteet was now at the store. When the deputy parked at the store, Poteet saw him and ran to his green Isuzu Rodeo parked in the parking lot. He backed up and pulled across Highway 20 to Hallwood Blvd so quickly that two cars had to stop suddenly to avoid being struck.
The deputy tried to stop Poteet, but Poteet drove wrecklessly south on Hallwood Blvd to his property in the 2800 block of Hooper Road. Poteet drove through the back yard and into a field behind the home, where he stopped on a dirt trail covered by thick brush when his vehicle became stuck.
The deputy and his K-9 partner approached Poteet, who was now out of his car. He threw a full 24-oz can of beer at the deputy. Poteet ran at them, and then picked up a stick and assumed a batting stance from about 15 feet away. Poteet refused to drop the stick and surrender, and the deputy ordered his K-9 to apprehend Poteet. The dog bit Poteet, who began to punch and kick the dog. As the deputy approached Poteet, Poteet swung his stick at the deputy.
While fighting with the deputy and his K-9, Poteet grabbed the deputy’s gun in the holster and tried to take it. He was eventually subdued and taken into arrest.
Poteet was booked into the Yuba County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, felony evading, resisting arrest, reckless driving, and failure to stop at a stop sign.
