Six Hour Standoff Ends Peacefully
(Posted 2/3/2010)
A six-hour standoff with a 22-year-old Marysville man ended peacefully Wednesday morning, Sheriff Steve Durfor said today.
A neighbor called to report a domestic argument in the 3000 block of Highway 20 in Hallwood at about 2:30 AM Wednesday. Durfor said. A few minutes later, the father of the man involved in the argument called the Sheriff’s Department. The father was concerned that his son was suicidal and asked deputies to check on him. Deputies located the man driving on Highway 20, and stopped him near Kibbe Road.
The man was armed with a handgun, and threatening to kill himself. Deputies talked to him for over an hour in an effort to calm him down and disarm him, but he refused. Officers from Marysville Police Department and the California Highway Patrol assisted with traffic control until the man moved further away from the road. The Sheriff’s Department Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT team were deployed, and negotiators talked to the man for several hours until he agreed to surrender at about 9:15 AM. He was uninjured.
The one nearby residence was evacuated by the CHP a short while into the standoff. Due to the rural setting, no other homes were threatened. “It is a testament to the determination and teamwork of all involved that this situation was resolved peacefully,” Durfor said.
